Volleyball Sweeps Southern Maine and Western Connecticut

DANBURY, Conn. – The William Paterson volleyball team (18-9, 6-1 NJAC) picked up a pair of non-conference wins after sweeping Southern Maine (5-22, 0-7 Little East) and Western Connecticut (15-11, 4-3 Little East) Nov. 2.  
 
MATCH ONE:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • William Paterson jumped out to an early 12-6 lead in the opening set. A 6-1 run featuring a pair of kills by graduate student Hope Arce-Reed (New Carrollton, Md./College Park Academy) extended the advantage before the Pioneers went on to earn the 25-14 victory.
  • The Pioneers owned a seven-point lead (15-8) in the second set before Southern Maine rattled off four unanswered points to trim the deficit to three. However, WP erupted for a 10-2 run to close the set and secure the 25-14 win.
  • Back-to-back points pulled Southern Maine within two (17-15) in the third set before WP went on a 9-3 run to claim the 25-18 victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Arce-Reed had a team-high nine kills with a pair of block assists.
  • Sophomore Sofia Zablackis (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) tallied eight kills and four total blocks.
  • Sophomore Taylor Grady (Hillsdale, N.J./Pasack Valley) dished out a career-best 27 assists to pair with a career-high 10 digs for her first collegiate double-double.
  • Senior Paola Molina (Hatillo, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Felipe) finished with a match-high 21 digs.
     
MATCH TWO:
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The two sides were even at 16-16 in the first set when a kill by sophomore Kristian Glenn (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) sparked a 9-3 run that gave WP the 25-19 win.
  • The Pioneers trailed 8-6 in the second set before going on a 12-4 run to take a six-point advantage (18-12). Western Connecticut responded with a 7-3 run to pull within two (21-19), but WP closed the set with four unanswered points to secure the 25-19 victory.
  • The Wolves held a one-point edge (18-17) when a kill by sophomore Cecilia Miller (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) started a 5-2 run that put WP ahead, 22-20. The Pioneers outscored the Wolves 3-1 the rest of the way to grab the 25-22 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Arce-Reed posted a match-high 13 kills.
  • Miller had a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs.
  • Sophomore Abby Houpt (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) dished out a match-best 32 assists.
  • Molina recorded a match-high 16 digs.
  • Sophomore Laura Gruener (Hackettstown, N.J./Hackettstown) totaled four solo blocks.

  • William Paterson hosts Rutgers-Newark for senior day on Tuesday, Nov. 5, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match slated for 7:00 p.m.
