Men’s Soccer’s ECAC Tournament Run Ends in Overtime, 4-3

Pioneers Fall to Alvernia in First Round

NEWARK, N.J. – The seventh-seeded William Paterson men's soccer team's (9-8-3) Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship run came to an end with a 4-3 overtime first-round loss to second-seeded Alvernia (11-8-3) Nov. 16 at Rutgers-Newark's Frederick Douglass Field.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Golden Wolves struck first with an unassisted goal in the 15th minute, but WP junior Matthew Escobar (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) knotted the score at 1-1 at the 35:29 mark.
  • Alvernia was able to carry a 2-1 advantage into halftime, scoring 2:15 before the break.
  • Junior Dylan Nahas (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) connected on a pass from classmate Jonathan Antonio (Edison, N.J./Edison), making it a 2-2 game in the 54th minute.
  • Senior Diego Navas (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) handed the Pioneers their first lead of the day, finding the back of the net less than one minute later with an unassisted strike.
  • Alvernia was awarded a penalty kick with 5:38 remaining in regulation, converting to tie the match at 3-3.
  • The Golden Wolves netted the game winner 2:58 into the extra period.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Junior Luka Misko collected three saves for WP.
  • Escobar's goal was his second of the season, and Nahas scored his seventh. Antonio notched his second assist of the year.
  • Navas finished with 34 points this season (13 g, 8 a) to tie for fourth in points, tie for sixth in game-winning goals (three), tie for seventh in assists and tie for 10th in goals on the WP single-season charts. During his career, Navas collected 38 goals (fourth at WP), 13 assists (10th), 89 points (fifth) and five game-winning goals (tied-seventh).
