Men's Basketball Cruises to 93-75 Season-Opening Win at York (N.Y.)

JAMAICA, N.Y. – Six Pioneers scored in double figures as the William Paterson men's basketball team (1-0) opened its 2024-25 campaign with a convincing 93-75 win at York (N.Y.) (0-2) Nov. 12.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers trailed by three (9-6) with 15:26 on the clock before senior Tim Gjonballa (Brooklyn, N.Y./Jackson Liberty) converted on a three-point play that sparked a 22-7 WP run spanning 4:18 of action. During that stretch, freshman Jack Gobel (Weehawken, N.J./Weehawken) knocked down all four of his shot attempts for eight points.
  • WP carried a 14-point advantage (51-37) into the halftime break and maintained its double-digit lead throughout the entirety of the second half to secure the 93-75 win.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior Neftali Valentin (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) led the Pioneers with 17 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists.
  • Senior David Martinez (Maywood, N.J./Hackensack) tallied 15 points and nine boards.
  • Senior Andre Wells (Matawan, N.J./Matawan) recorded a double-double after scoring 13 points and dishing out a game-high 11 assists to go with five rebounds.
  • Senior Shane Geene (Lafayette, N.J./Wallkill Valley Regional) logged 13 points on 6-of-7 (.857) shooting.
  • Gobel went 4-for-8 (.500) from the field for 11 points in his collegiate debut.
  • Freshman Delani Hyde (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) finished with 10 points and five rebounds in his first collegiate game.
  • William Paterson won its season opener for the fourth consecutive year.
  • The 93 points were the most by the Pioneers in a game since scoring 99 during a double-overtime win against Rutgers-Camden Feb. 11, 2023.
