BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The William Paterson men's swimming and diving team opened the 2024-25 season at the Gryphons Sprint Carnival, Oct. 19, finishing 3-0. The Pioneers defeated Sarah Lawrence (1-2), 168-31, Purchase College (0-3), 176-12, and Brooklyn College (2-1), 148-73.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- Sophomore Owen Kane (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) secured first-place finishes in the 50 breast (31.69) and 100 breast (1:12.73).
- Freshman Derek Gutowski (Succasunna, N.J./Roxburry) posted his first WP victory in the 50 back (28.58).
- Freshman Mario Pontidis (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) finished first in the 50 free (23.61) and 100 back (1:00.77) in his collegiate debut.
- Freshman Isaiah Pierre (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) secured his first-place victory in the 50 fly (26.07).
- Sophomore Justin Melli (Erma, N.J./Lower Cape May Regional) clinched first place in the 100 individual medley (1:03.84).
- WP secured first place in the 200 free relay, after Melli, senior Ricardo Ordinola (Lodi, N.J./Passaic County Tech), Pierre, and Pontidis finished with a time 1:39.05.
- The Pioneers placed first in the 200 medley relay (1:50.32) with efforts from Gutowski, Kane, Ordinola and Pontidis.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Ordinola posted personal bests in the 50 fly (26.94) and 100 fly (1:01.38).
- Senior Jason Peralta (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) beat his personal record in the 50 back (37.11)
