Men's Basketball Falls Short Versus Rutgers-Camden in Overtime

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (6-10, 1-8 NJAC) fell short 76-73 in overtime to Rutgers-Camden (9-7, 4-5 NJAC) in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game Jan. 13 at the Sports and Recreation Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • William Paterson trailed by six (30-24) with less than three minutes remaining in the first half before an 11-0 run gave the Pioneers a five-point edge (35-30) heading into halftime. In those closing three minutes, the Pioneers went 4-for-4 (1.000) from the floor, including three makes from long range.
  • The Scarlet Raptors worked to chip into the deficit and eventually took back control of the game midway through the second half after outscoring the Pioneers 18-4 over a span of 5:02 to grab the lead (59-50) with 6:24 remaining.
  • The Pioneers responded immediately with an 11-0 run to go ahead 61-59 with 1:13 left to play.
  • After both sides connected on a pair of foul shots, William Paterson led 63-61 with 22 seconds on the clock, but the Scarlet Raptors tied the game before time expired to force overtime.
  • Junior Neftali Valentin (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) knocked down a three to open the overtime period, but Rutgers-Camden outscored William Paterson 13-4 and went on to capture the 76-73 road victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) paced the Pioneers with 21 points to pair with five rebounds.
  • Graduate student MJ Moncrieffe (Maplewood, N.J./Marist) logged a double-double after scoring 13 points and corralling 12 boards.
  • Valentin finished with 10 points.
  • Junior Andre Wells (Matawan, N.J./Matawan) recorded nine boards and a team-best four assists.

  • The Pioneers head to Union, N.J., Wednesday, Jan. 17, for an 8:30 p.m. conference game at Kean.
