Men's Soccer Opens Season with a 3-2 Victory Over Baruch

Goalkeeper Thomas Hatch Breaks WP Career Saves Record

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's soccer team (1-0) opened its season with a 3-2 victory over Baruch (0-1), Sept. 1 at Pioneer Soccer Park. Graduate student goalkeeper Thomas Hatch (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) broke the William Paterson career saves record, recording his 230th career save. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior Diego Navas (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) found the back of the net in the 10th minute with an assist from junior Gianfranco Banca (Queens, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy).
  • The Bearcats posted their first goal in the 26th minute.
  • Navas lifted the Pioneers to a 2-1 lead with a goal in the 30th minute.
  • Baruch tied the score, 2-2, in the 50th minute.
  • The Pioneers took the lead during the 57th minute with a goal by Banca, assisted by freshman Chimjae Mukanda (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth).
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Graduate student Thomas Hatch (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) broke the WP career saves record, posting six saves for a total of 230 career saves. The record was previously held at 228 saves by 2016-19 goalkeeper Kyle Quigley.
  • Navas recorded the 14th goal of his career.
  • Banca scored his first WP goal with the help of Mukanda's first collegiate assist.
