Softball Closes Out the Regular Season with a Non-Conference Win Over John Jay

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (22-13-1) closed out its regular season with a non-conference win over John Jay (22-14) on May 4.
 
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WP seized a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first. Graduate student Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) got the Pioneers started with a single to left and stole second. With two outs, designated player Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) singled to left field, scoring Vera.
  • The Pioneers extended the lead to two in the fourth with a single by graduate student Carly McDaniel (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton). She stole second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Monahan.
  • John Jay shortened WP's lead to one in the top of the fifth with a double and two sacrifice bunts.
  • Sophomore Jaelynn Miller (Oxford, N.J./Warren Hills) pitched the last three innings, recording four strikeouts and allowing one hit to secure the 2-1 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Monahan went 2-for-2 with two RBI.
  • Vera and McDaniel finished 1-for-3 with one run scored. Both recorded their 22nd stolen base this season to place them sixth on the WP all-time statistical records for season-high stolen bases.
  • Freshman Lilah Guthy (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) earned the win (9-4), pitching 4.1 innings while allowing three hits, one run and posting a strikeout.
  • Miller pitched 2.2 innings and collected her second save of the season, placing her third on the WP all-time statistical records for season-high saves and fifth for career saves.

  • William Paterson travels to Glassboro, N.J. for a 4 p.m. matchup against Rowan in the first round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday, May 6.
