Baseball Topped in Conference Twinbill by Kean

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (13-9, 2-3 NJAC) dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Kean (16-11, 5-1 NJAC) April 8 at Jeff Albies Field. The Pioneers fell 9-1 in game one before being edged 3-2 in game two.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Cougars got two runners on in the top of the first with a single and a walk before one came around to score on an RBI base hit to center to put Kean ahead, 1-0.
  • Kean extended its lead to three (3-0) in the third after three straight one-out hits and a sacrifice fly to right.
  • The leadoff Kean batter in the seventh reached safely on a William Paterson throwing error and it proved to be a costly mishap as the runner scored on an RBI base knock to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead.
  • William Paterson trimmed the deficit to three (4-1) in the bottom half of the frame after loading the bases before junior Noah Cabassa (Pomona, N.Y./North Rockland) hit a sacrifice fly to left.
  • Kean put the game away in the eighth, however, after loading the bases with no outs before three consecutive singles drove in four runs to push the lead to eight (9-1).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Graduate student Steve Yelin (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) went 2-for-4 with a walk.
  • Yelin caught all three Kean baserunners attempting to steal.
  • Graduate student Colin Lombardo (Edison, N.J./Edison) was responsible for William Paterson's lone run.
  • Graduate student Carson Weis (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) and junior Jake Lutz (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) each tallied a hit.

GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The second game of the twinbill featured a pitching duel as both starters kept the opposition off the board for most of the contest.
  • It was not until the bottom of the sixth that the Pioneers got on the board. Weis and graduate student Dan Carter (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) notched back-to-back one-out singles. After the second out was recorded, Carter was caught straying too far off of first on a wild pitch and as the Cougars tried to get him out on the play, Weis jolted for third and a throwing error allowed him to score.
  • Kean came up to bat in the seventh and plated a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead.
  • The Cougars tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on a solo home run.
  • In the ninth, the Pioneers loaded the bases with two outs following three consecutive walks. Weis was then hit by a pitch, allowing a run to score that cut the deficit to one (3-2). However, that would be as close as William Paterson would get as the Cougars successfully worked out of the jam to earn the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Weis went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Graduate student Steven DiGirolamo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) finished with a pair of singles in four at-bats.
  • Lombardo batted 2-for-4 with a walk.

UP NEXT:
  • The Pioneers return to action Monday, April 10, when they welcome The College of New Jersey for a 3:30 p.m. home NJAC game.
