Softball Sweeps Drew in Home-Opening Contests

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (13-1) swept a five-inning and seven-inning doubleheader against Drew (12-6), 9-1 and 8-4, Tuesday, March 28 at Pioneer Softball Field.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers seized a 6-0 lead during the bottom of the third inning. Junior Haley Weinberger (Williamstown, N.J./Hammonton) walked and graduate student Jillian Bigos (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) followed up with a hit to second, reaching on a fielding error. Graduate student Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) singled through the left side and graduate student Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) bombed one over the center field fence to bring everyone home.
  • Three more singles by sophomore Kylie Bythrow (Deptford, N.J./Deptford), junior Gianna Mulato (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) and Weinberger extended the lead 6-0.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, graduate student Carly McDaniel (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton) was hit by a pitch and took first. She stole second and Vera followed up with a walk. McDaniel and Vera advanced another base on a wild pitch to place themselves in scoring position. Monahan singled through the right side, sending Vera and McDaniel home to take an 8-0 lead.
  • Bythrow singled to right center and junior Michaela Raguseo (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic Valley) pinch ran. Mulato and senior Kilee Oertel (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) walked to load the bases with one out. Junior Grace Gaskill (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) posted a RBI with a hit to shortstop to send Raguseo home, scoring the Pioneer's ninth run.
  • Drew got on the board in the top of the fifth with a double and single to shorten the deficit to eight, but it was not enough to continue.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Monahan went 2-3 with a homerun, six RBI and a run scored.
  • Weinberger hit 1-2 with two RBI and a run scored.
  • Bythrow finished 2-3 with a run scored.
  • .Sophomore Jaelynn Miller (Oxford, N.J./Warren Hills) (6-0) earned the win with four innings pitched, one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
 
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WP came out hot with a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Bigos singled up the middle and advanced to second on a single by McDaniel. Both followed up with a stolen base. Monahan grounded out to second base, but sent Bigos home for the RBI. Bythrow followed up with a single, scoring McDaniel. Mulato sent a double to left center to bring Bythrow home.
  • Drew shortened the lead to two with two singles and a wild pitch.
  • In the bottom of the third, Monahan singled through the left side and freshman Lilah Guthy (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) pinch ran. Guthy scored on a double to left field by Bythrow. Oertel hit one to third base and reached first on an error that also sent Bythrow home to extend the lead 5-1.
  • Gaskill started the bottom of the fifth with a double to right center. She would score with a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Lauren Hutchison (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) and a single up the middle by freshman Hailey Backo (Wallington, N.J./Wallington). McDaniel sent one down the right field line, collecting two RBI for an 8-1 advantage.
  • The Rangers scored their second run in the sixth with a single, double and throwing error to shorten the Pioneer's lead to six.
  • In the top of the seventh, the Pioneers collected two outs quickly. With two hit-by-pitches, a single and a wild pitch the Rangers cut the lead to 8-4 but could not comeback. The Pioneers secured their twelfth consecutive win.
     
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • McDaniel hit 2-3, recording two RBI and a run scored.
  • Bythrow finished 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Backo hit 1-1 posting a RBI and one run scored.
  • Guthy (5-0) earned the win, pitching four innings with three hits allowed and one run scored.
UP NEXT:
  • The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, April 1 to open up NJAC play home against Rowan at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
