Softball Drops Two in NJAC Opener Against No. 15 Rowan

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (13-3) dropped a doubleheader to No. 15 Rowan (19-3), 3-0 and 6-3, to open up NJAC play on Sunday, April 2 at Pioneer Softball Field.


GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In the top of the second Rowan scored first with a single, fielding error and wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers had a chance with two runners left on base in the bottom half with two walks by sophomore Kylie Bythrow (Deptford, N.J./Deptford) and graduate student Anna Nunziato (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo), but could not cut the deficit.
  • The Profs extended the lead to 3-0 in the top half of the fourth.
  • The Pioneers had runners in scoring position in the seventh inning with a double by graduate student Carly McDaniel (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton) and a walk by Nunziato but the Profs held on to secure the 3-0 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Nunziato went 1-1 with a double and a stolen base.
  • McDaniel finished 1-3 with a double and a stolen base.
  • Graduate student Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) hit 1-3 with a double.
 
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Profs seized a 1-0 lead in the top of second with a two singles, a sac bunt and a fielding error. WP took the lead in the bottom half of the inning with two singles by McDaniel and Nunziato and a two RBI double to right field by junior Gianna Mulato (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.).
  • Rowan answered back in the top of the third with three runs, to grab a 4-2 advantage.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, graduate student Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) led off with a single up the middle. Senior Gabriella Brancaccio (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) pinch ran for Monahan. Nunziato followed up with a walk to place Brancaccio in scoring position. Mulato doubled to left field, scoring Brancaccio to cut the deficit to one.
  • A homer by the Profs in the top of the sixth extended the lead back to two, 5-3. Rowan scored one more run in the seventh to take a 6-3 advantage and held the Pioneers for the win.
     
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Mulato hit 3-3, with three doubles and three RBI.
  • Junior Hailey Weinberger finished 3-4.
  • Nunziato went 1-1 with a run scored.
UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson travels to Mahwah, N.J. for a NJAC doubleheader against Ramapo College at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
