WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's basketball team (9-14, 3-13 NJAC) was edged, 73-70, in a down-to-the-wire New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game against Rutgers-Newark (7-16, 5-11 NJAC) on Feb. 8 at the Sports and Recreation Center.


HOW IT HAPPENED:

• The Pioneers went into the half with a slim 37-34 advantage before the Scarlet Raiders worked to even the score at 40 apiece following a 3-pointer with 18:15 on the clock in the second stanza. That make from long range sparked a 20-7 Rutgers-Newark run that put the Scarlet Raiders ahead by 10 (57-47) with 13:05 left to play.
• William Paterson began to chip into the deficit and took a one-point lead (68-67) with 2:57 remaining following a 16-6 run that lasted 7:45 of action.
• The two sides sat tied at 70-70 with just under a minute left to play before Rutgers-Newark took a two-point lead with 48 seconds remaining. William Paterson was not able to generate a quality look the rest of the way and ultimately fell, 73-70.

 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Junior Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) scored a team-high 15 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals.
• Senior Adryan Lopez (Garfield, N.J./Lyndhurst) recorded 13 points to pair with a team-best six rebounds.
• Senior Neftali Valentin (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) and junior Tyreek Montgomery (Neptune, N.J./Admiral Farragut) each finished the night with 11 points.

• The Pioneers will host Rutgers-Camden on Saturday, Feb. 11, for a Senior Day game slated for 3:00 p.m. at the Sports and Recreation Center.
