Football Falls in Season Finale at Rowan

GLASSBORO, N.J. – The William Paterson football team (2-8, 1-5 NJAC) fell 24-14 in the 2023 season finale at Rowan (5-5, 4-2 NJAC) Nov. 10.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Profs received the ball to start the game and used 12 plays to drive 59 yards down the field to gain the early 7-0 lead with 9:27 on the clock.
  • William Paterson capitalized on its first possession of the night as well, piecing together a 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive that was capped off by a three-yard rushing score from sophomore Isaac Cherry (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) to even the score (7-7) with 2:28 remaining in the opening frame. On that drive, junior quarterback Christopher Leimberg (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) connected with senior wide receiver Matt Clarke (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) three times for 56 yards.
  • Rowan began a drive in the second quarter with 4:38 on the clock at their own 46-yard line when a rushing play resulted in a fumble recovery by senior Ricky Colon (Hoboken, N.J./Hoboken). Starting at its own 49-yard line, WP drove 51 yards down the field and took a 14-7 lead after Cherry powered his way into the end zone from seven yards out for his second score of the night.
  • With 5:05 on the clock in the third quarter, the Profs were at the WP three-yard line and had to settle for a 20-yard field goal that made it a four-point game (14-10) after failing to find their way into the end zone.
  • Rowan took the lead (16-14) with 9:05 remaining in the game after a four-yard rushing touchdown capped a 40-yard scoring drive.
  • The Profs gained possession of the ball at the WP 11-yard line with 2:02 left to play after an interception and scored on a four-yard rushing score on fourth down to go ahead by 10 (24-14).
