Football Topped by Christopher Newport on Senior Day

WAYNE, N.Y. – The William Paterson football team (2-6, 1-3 NJAC) was defeated 33-13 by Christopher Newport (6-2, 4-0 NJAC) in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game Oct. 28 at Wightman Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Captains wasted no time and on their first play from scrimmage scored on a 61-yard pass to gain the early 7-0 advantage.
  • On their ensuing possession in the first quarter, the Captains once again found their way into the end zone. On a drive that began with 12:36 on the clock, Christopher Newport used six plays to march 57 yards down the field and score on a 20-yard pass to extend the lead to 14.
  • With 3:29 remaining in the first frame, Christopher Newport tacked on three points following a 31-yard field goal.
  • The Captains got the ball back with 1:20 on the clock on their own 27-yard line after forcing a three-and-out. However, on the first play of the drive, senior Yubir Rojas-Herrera (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) tipped a pass into the air and classmate Alajuwon Bell (Paterson, N.J./Garrett Morgan Academy) corralled it before scampering 21 yards into the end zone for a touchdown that trimmed the deficit to 11 (17-6).
  • Christopher Newport began a drive at the end of the first quarter and used 11 plays to get into field goal range and connect on a 29-yard kick to push the advantage to 14 (20-6) with 9:23 remaining in the half.
  • The Pioneers started with the ball on the Christopher Newport 30-yard line to begin the second half after sophomore Tyreek Rollins (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) returned the kickoff 64 yards. WP worked its way down into the red zone before sophomore Isaac Cherry (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) bulldozed his way into the end zone from four yards out to make it a one-score game (20-13) with 11:36 on the clock.
  • That would be as close as WP would get as the Captains scored a pair of touchdowns on back-to-back drives in the fourth quarter to seal the 33-13 road win.

 INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Cherry totted the ball 14 times for 37 yards and his first career touchdown.
