Football Upended on the Road by Ursinus

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The William Paterson football team (2-4) was upended on the road by Ursinus (4-2), 39-15, Oct. 14.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A poor snap on a punt attempt went out the back of the end zone to hand the Bears a 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest.
  • A nine-yard rush and PAT made it a 9-0 Ursinus advantage with 8:52 remaining in the first quarter, and a 43-yard pass play extended it to a 16-0 edge six minutes later.
  • Junior Samod Wingo (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) blocked a Bear punt and classmate Robert Hamilton (Camden, N.J./Camden) returned it 28 yards into the end zone. Freshman Robert Crehan (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) kicked the extra point to make it a 16-7 margin as time expired during the opening period.
  • Ursinus connected for a 20-yard pass play to build a 23-7 advantage 2:43 before halftime.
  • Junior quarterback Christopher Leimberg (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) found senior Matt Clarke (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch), who turned the short pass into a 40-yard touchdown with 11:16 on the clock in the third. Leimberg converted the two-point try on the ground, and WP trailed by a 23-15 count.
  • The Bears kicked a 26-yard field goal (26-15, 11:22), posted a five-yard touchdown through the air (32-15, 5:37) and added a two-yard run into the end zone (39-15, 4:42) during the fourth quarter.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Leimberg was 7-for-27 for 93 yards, one touchdown and an interception.
  • Clarke hauled in four passes for 80 yards and a TD. Sophomore Isaac Cherry (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) rushed 12 times for 22 yards.
  • Sophomore defensive back James Nevels (Wilmington, Del./Delaware Military Academy) led WP with nine tackles while adding an interception.
