Men’s Soccer’s Senior Night Spoiled by NJCU, 3-2

VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson men's soccer team (5-9, 1-4 NJAC) seized an early lead but couldn't hold off visiting New Jersey City (6-5-1, 1-4 NJAC), 3-2, on WP's Senior Night Oct. 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers took an early 1-0 lead when junior Diego Navas (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) converted a penalty kick after freshman Thomas Rogan (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) was fouled inside the left edge of the box.
  • Navas made it a 2-0 advantage eight minutes later. Freshman Sergio Dal Ferro (Sauze d'Oulx, Italy/Instituto Sociale) played a ball to junior Gianfranco Banca (Queens, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy), who one-touched up the right side to a streaking Navas. He beat his defender into the right side of the box, then struck a shot that found the inside of the left netting.
  • The Gothic Knights scored twice in a five-minute span early in the second half, the second goal coming via a penalty kick.
  • NJCU jumped ahead by a 3-2 count in the 69th minute.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Graduate student Thomas Hatch (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) contributed nine saves.
  • Prior to the match, WP honored its five seniors/graduate students Roger Bermejo (Passaic, N.J./Passaic County Technical Institute), Hatch, Kyle Hanlon (Charleston, S.C./James Island Carter), David Moreira (Pittstown, N.J./North Hunterdon) and Owen Stahl (Succasunna, N.J./Seton Hall Prep).
  • Navas, who started the night third in the conference in goals, raised his season total to 11.
