Men's Basketball Comeback Bid Falls Short Against Stockton

WAYNE, N.J. – Despite a late run, the William Paterson men's basketball team (9-11, 3-10 NJAC) was unable to overcome an early deficit and ultimately fell, 83-73, to Stockton (17-3, 11-2 NJAC) in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Jan. 28 at the Sports and Recreation Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Stockton built a double-digit advantage in the first half after making nine 3-pointers and shooting over 43 percent from the field (17-of-39) to go into the break leading 43-29.
  • William Paterson came out for the second half and looked like a different team on the offensive end, knocking down 15-of-28 (.536) shots from the floor with seven makes from long range.
  • The Pioneers continued to chip into the large deficit and with 4:46 remaining in the game, junior Tyreek Montgomery (Neptune, N.J./Admiral Farragut) buried a midrange jumper to spark an 8-1 run and William Paterson pulled within six (79-73). That would be as close as the Pioneers would get though as the Ospreys iced the game at the foul line to secure the road win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Junior Tyreek Montgomery (Neptune, N.J./Admiral Farragut) led the Pioneers with 19 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists.
  • Junior Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) logged 16 points in the scoring column to pair with a team-high eight rebounds.
  • Junior Caesar Silvestro (Ridgewood, N.J,/Pascack Hills) poured in 16 points on 6-of-7 (.857) shooting with six boards and a pair of blocks.
  • Sophomore David Martinez (Maywood, N.J./Hackensack) buried three 3-pointers for a nine-point outing.

UP NEXT:
  • The Pioneers will go on the road to face off against Montclair State on Wednesday, Feb. 1, in a 7:30 p.m. NJAC contest in Montclair, N.J.
