Baseball Falls in Bottom of the Ninth at Scranton, 19-18

SCRANTON, PA. – After rallying to take an 18-16 lead in the seventh, the William Paterson baseball team (23-12) suffered a 19-18 walkoff loss at Scranton (23-7-1) April 25.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Pioneers scored five times during their first at-bat, using a two-run single by senior designated hitter Dylan Habeeb (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills), a two-run triple by graduate student first baseman Carson Weis (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) and an RBI-groundout by senior right fielder Vinnie Martin (Lodi, N.J./Bergen Catholic).
  • The Royals posted a pair of runs during both the first and second innings, cutting their deficit to 5-4.
  • Three singles and a triple helped Scranton score six times in the third, taking a 10-5 lead.
  •  Sophomore second baseman Jake Lutz (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) singled in one run and senior catcher Steve Yelin (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) belted a three-run homer, bringing WP to within one at 10-9 during the top of the fourth inning.
  • The Royals crossed the plate once during the home half of the fourth, building an 11-9 edge.
  • A double play scored one run and a passed ball sent home another for the Pioneers, knotting the score at 11-11 in the fifth.
  • Scranton crossed the plate five times during their next at-bat, making it a 16-11 margin.
  • Yelin's double resulted in a run and senior left fielder Dan Carter (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) added an RBI-groundout in the top of the sixth for a 16-13 game.
  • Senior third baseman Colin Lombardo (Edison, N.J./Edison) was hit by a bases-loaded pitch, Lutz had a run-scoring hit, Yelin contributed a sacrifice fly, and Carter and Habeeb each added an RBI-single for an 18-16 lead during the top half of the seventh inning.
  • Scranton tied the score in the eighth, then used a base hit, groundout, intentional walk and single to produce the game-winning run in the ninth.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Habeeb was 4-for-6 with three RBI and two runs scored. Yelin finished 2-for-5 with a double, homer, five RBI and three runs.
  • Weis went 3-for-5 while posting a triple, two RBI and two runs scored. Martin was 3-for-5 with one RBI and two runs, and Lutz went 3-for-6 with two RBI and three runs.
  • Freshman Nick Durso (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) tossed 2.2 innings, allowing 10 runs (nine earned), seven hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
  • Classmate Pat Pantoliano (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) went 1.0 inning and struck out one while giving up one run and four hits. Senior Justin Grippo (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) recorded two outs, surrendering two hits, four runs and one walk.
  • Senior Matt Lawler (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) recorded two hits and one run allowed over 0.2 inning, and freshman Neel Telidevara (Dayton, N.J./South Brunswick) gave up two unearned runs and two hits, striking out one in 2.1 innings of action.
  • Junior Darmany Rivas (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) was charged with one run and one hit while posting one strikeout in 0.2 inning (0-1). Senior Riley Weis (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) allowed a hit and a walk with one strikeout over the final 0.2. inning.
