Baseball’s Late Rally Lifts Pioneers to 4-1 Victory

WP Defeats Keystone After Eighth-Inning Surge

PURCHASE, N.Y. – A four-run eighth inning lifted the William Paterson baseball team (12-6) to a 4-1 victory at Keystone (6-11) March 24.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A single, double and error allowed the Giants to break the scoreless tie with one unearned run during the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • The Pioneers scored all four of their runs during their second-to-last at-bat. Senior Justin Grippo (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) opened the frame with a pinch-hit double, and senior shortstop Chris Liriano (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) sacrificed him to third. Senior third baseman Colin Lombardo (Edison, N.J./Edison) followed with an RBI-double, and after a flyout and an intentional walk issued to senior catcher Steve Yelin (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional), senior right fielder Dan Carter (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) delivered an RBI-single through the left side. Senior designated hitter Dylan Habeeb (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and junior center fielder Elliott Hayward (Marlton, N.J./Old Bridge) added consecutive run-scoring base hits for a 4-1 edge.
  • With the potential tying run at the plate, junior Darmany Rivas (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) came on to record a strikeout to end the bottom of the eighth. A single and walk again brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but a strikeout and groundout double play ended the game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Carter was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Lombardo, Habeeb and Hayward each contributed an RBI.
  • Junior Ian Metzger (Verona, N.J./Verona) improved to 5-1 with 7.0 innings of seven-hit ball, allowing one unearned run and two walks while striking out five.
  • Freshman Neel Telidevara (Dayton, N.J./South Brunswick) gave up one hit and struck out one during 0.2 inning of relief. Rivas earned his second save of the season after 1.1 innings, giving up a hit and a walk with two strikeouts.
