DAVENPORT, FLA. – The William Paterson baseball team (8-5) couldn't overcome Western New England (5-1), 10-4, March 16 at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WP opened up a 1-0 first-inning lead when senior second baseman Colin Lombardo (Edison, N.J./Edison) was hit by a pitch, stole second and moved to third on an error, and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior left fielder Steve Yelin (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional).
  • A two-run single handed the Golden Bears a 2-1 second-inning edge.
  • Yelin singled in Lombardo, who was hit by a pitch, to knot the score at 2-2 during the top of the third inning.
  • Five hits, including a pair of doubles, plated four WNEU runs for a 6-2 game after five frames.
  • A sixth-inning sac fly pushed the Golden Bears' advantage to 7-2.
  • Lombardo's solo shot to left center cut the deficit to 7-3 in the top of the seventh.
  • WP strung together a Vinnie Martin (Lodi, N.J./Bergen Catholic) hit and error, a Jake Lutz (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) base hit and a wild pitch, crossing the plate once during the top half of the eighth inning.
  • Five walks, a passed ball and an error scored three Western New England runners in the home half of the eighth.
