Baseball Splits Pair at Stevens, 10-1 and 4-6

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The William Paterson baseball team (2-1) split a doubleheader at Stevens (3-2) Feb. 21, winning the first game 10-1 in seven innings before seeing its late comeback fall short during the night cap, 6-4.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Ducks scored their lone run of the game during the home half of the second, using a single, wild pitch and pair of errors.
  • WP got the run back in the top of the fifth, as senior second baseman Colin Lombardo (Edison, N.J./Edison) was hit by the first pitch of the frame, senior center fielder Justin Grippo (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) sacrificed him to second, and senior right fielder Vinnie Martin (Lodi, N.J./Bergen Catholic) later delivered an RBI-single through the left side.
  • The Pioneers took the lead during the sixth. Graduate student first baseman Carson Weis (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) sent a leadoff double to right center, sophomore shortstop Jake Lutz (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) was hit by a pitch and Lombardo sacrificed the runners up a base, setting up Grippo's sac fly to center field.
  • William Paterson exploded for eight runs during its final at-bat. Weis singled in Carter, who had a base hit through the right side, Lombardo's bases-loaded hit by pitch forced across senior third baseman Chris Liriano (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield), and Grippo singled in Weis. A later wild pitch plated Lombardo, and junior left fielder Elliott Hayward's (Marlton, N.J./Old Bridge) grand slam finished the scoring at 10-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Yelin went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored, and Weis was 2-for-5 while adding a double, RBI and pair of runs scored. Hayward was 1-for-2 with the grand slam.
  • Junior Ian Metzger (Verona, N.J./Verona) pitched the 7.0-inning complete game, scattering three hits and one unearned run while striking out four Ducks (1-0).

GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Grippo's one-out solo homer handed WP a 1-0 first-inning edge.
  • Stevens seized a 5-1 lead in the fourth, using two singles, a double and a grand slam.
  • Lombardo doubled to right-center field and Yelin put an RBI-single into center for a 5-2 score in the fifth.
  • A triple and double extended the Ducks' advantage to 6-2 during the home half of the fifth frame.
  • Freshman third baseman Ruven Pino (Fairview, N.J./Bergen Catholic) cleared the fence in right center for a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning.
