Women's Basketball Edged in Overtime by Kean

UNION, N.J. – The William Paterson women's basketball team (3-2, 0-1 NJAC) fell 52-47 in overtime to Kean (3-2, 1-0 NJAC) in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener on Nov. 22.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • It was a tightly-contested conference battle as neither team was able to gain much separation. The Pioneers held a two-point lead (40-38) with 1:14 remaining in the game, but a pair of free throws by the Cougars on their ensuing possession evened the score and forced an overtime period.
  • Kean jumped out to a four-point advantage (44-40) after scoring on back-to-back shots in overtime and held the lead for the remainder of play to grab the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman Renee Wells (Leonardo, N.J./Middletown South) led all Pioneers with 12 points for her third consecutive double-digit scoring performance.
  • Senior Justina Cabezas (Carlstadt, N.J./Becton Regional) posted her second double-double of the season after logging 10 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Senior Yakira Rosa (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) scored 10 points and reeled in six boards.
  • Junior Brianna Smith (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) corralled a season-high 11 rebounds, tying her career-best mark, to go along with nine points.

UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson returns to the Sports and Recreation Center on Wednesday, Nov. 30, to welcome New Jersey City for a 6:00 p.m. NJAC tilt.
