Men's Basketball Bested in Conference Opener by Kean

UNION, N.J. - A late second-half run by Kean (6-0, 1-0 NJAC) made the difference as the William Paterson men's basketball team (3-2, 0-1 NJAC) fell to the Cougars, 85-76, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opener on Nov. 22.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • In a back-and-forth NJAC game, the Pioneers led by two (71-69) with 5:27 remaining in the contest. However, a 16-2 Kean run that started at the 4:59 mark and lasted just over three minutes put the Cougars on top, 85-73, and gave them the eventual conference win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Junior Tyreek Montgomery (Neptune, N.J./Admiral Farragut) extended his double-digit scoring streak to five games after scoring a career-high 37 points to pair with eight rebounds.
  • He shot 14-of-19 (.736) from the field and 6-of-10 (.600) from long range.
  • It was the first 30-point performance by a Pioneer since Domenic Mignone '22 dropped 34 against Westfield St. on Nov. 13, 2021 and the most scored in a single game since Joseph Taylor '17 tallied 40 points against Stockton on Jan. 28, 2017.
  • Junior Shawn Summers Jr. (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) posted his first career double-double with a career-high in points (17) and rebounds (12).

UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson returns to the Sports and Recreation Center on Wednesday, Nov. 30, to welcome New Jersey City for an 8:00 p.m. NJAC tilt.
