Football Bested on Road by Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The William Paterson football team (4-4, 1-3 NJAC) fell 31-7 to Christopher Newport (5-2, 3-0 NJAC) in an NJAC road tilt on Oct. 22.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Christopher Newport picked off the Pioneers on William Paterson's first drive of the afternoon and returned it to the end zone for the score to take a 7-0 lead.
  • A shanked punt late in the opening quarter set up the Pioneers on the Captains' 38-yard line with 3:20 on the clock. William Paterson turned to rookie running back Nazir Dale (Camden, N.J./Brimm Medical Arts) and he carried the Pioneers down the field, rushing six times before finding the end zone on his seventh attempt to even the score.
  • The Captains didn't waste any time and retook the lead on the ensuing possession following an 18-yard catch and score.
  • It remained a one-score game until Christopher Newport connected on a 27-yard field goal try in the third quarter to cap a 15-play drive.
  • The Captains had the ball at midfield to begin the fourth quarter and a 50-yard touchdown pass extended their lead to 24-7.
  • Christopher Newport tacked on one final score late in the final frame after a 13-play 65-yard drive was capped by an eight-yard rushing score to make it a 31-7 game.
