Football Pulls Away from Keystone for 42-14 Victory

Pioneers Score 28 Unanswered Points to Break 14-14 Deadlock

LA PLUME, PA. – Deadlocked at 14-14, William Paterson (1-2) scored 28 unanswered points to secure a 42-14 football victory at Keystone (0-3) Sept. 18. Sophomore running back Terrique Riddick (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) carried for three touchdowns and classmate Matt Clarke (Long Branch, N.J./Long Branch) caught a pair of scores.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Giants finished off their first possession with a one-yard touchdown, jumping ahead by a 7-0 count less than three minutes into the contest.
  • WP answered right away as Riddick ended a five-play, 68-yard drive with a 23-yard scamper into the end zone. Freshman Ronald Alvarez (Union City, N.J./Union City) kicked the extra point to tie the game at 7-7 with 10:29 left in the opening period.
  • A 28-yard pass by freshman quarterback Spencer Lee (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) to senior Siraj Abdul-Malik (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) opened the Pioneers' next possession, a drive that ended with a Riddick 11-yard TD (14-7, 5:20).
  • Keystone got the score back, finding the goal line from one yard out to again tie the game, this time at 14-14 with 2:06 to play in the first.
  • William Paterson started the second quarter by chewing up 62 yards and 6:49 of possession on 15 plays, including a Taz Burton (Millville, N.J./Bridgeton) seven-yard score, to go ahead for good at 21-14 at the 6:35 mark.
  • Riddick's third touchdown of the day came four minutes into the second half, a 22-yard run (28-14).
  • Lee twice connected with Clarke for scoring plays, the first from 36 yards out (35-14, 3:49 third) and the second from the 20-yard line (42-14, 14:10 fourth).
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Lee was 20-for-28 for 238 yards, three touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. Riddick carried 14 times for 116 yards and three scores, and Clarke caught five passes for 107 yards and two TDs.
  • Senior linebacker Sean Maldonato (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland Regional) had nine tackles, junior linebacker Nazier Wright (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) collected seven stops (2.0 TFL) and junior defensive lineman Nasir Adams (Newark, N.J./Hudson Catholic) made 2.0 sacks.
