Field Hockey Strikes Twice in Eight-Minute Span, Scores 2-1 Victory

Pioneers Defeat Arcadia Behind Goals from Mitchell

WAYNE, N.J. – The William Paterson field hockey team (3-1) spotted visiting Arcadia (1-5) a one-goal lead during the first half, but the Pioneers found the back of the cage twice in an eight-minute span for a 2-1 victory Sept. 16.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Knights broke the deadlock with 4:32 remaining in the second period off a penalty corner, drilling a shot from the left wing.
  • Senior back Alicia Mitchell (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany Hills) leveled the score at 1-1 in the 40th minute, taking a pass from senior midfielder Megan Hoopes (Westmont, N.J./Haddon Twp.) and sending a bouncing shot home from the right side.
  • Mitchell cashed in along the goal line, finishing an assist by classmate Abigail Viola (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe Twp.) to nudge the Pioneers ahead by a 2-1 count at the 47:48 mark.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman Kourtney Hartzel (York, Pa./West York Area) and sophomore Emily Hpoagland combined to stop two shots for the Pioneers.
  • The win was the third straight for WP, and the second come-from-behind win in a row.

UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson competes at No. 16 Vassar Saturday, Sept. 18, at 1:00 p.m.
