Women’s Soccer Finds Back of Net During Final Minute for 2-1 Double-Overtime Win

Fernandez Goal Lifts Pioneers at St. Joseph’s-Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Senior midfielder Isabel Fernandez (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) found the back of the net with 53 seconds remaining to lift the William Paterson women's soccer team (2-1) to a 2-1 double-overtime victory at St. Joseph's-Long Island (2-2) Sept. 15.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior back Kayla Miller (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) drilled a 35-yard free kick for a 1-0 Pioneer advantage in the 26th minute.
  • The Golden Eagles scored the equalizer with just five seconds left in regulation on an unassisted strike.
  • Freshman back Hailey Nelson (Elmer, N.J./A.P. Schalick) played a through ball to Fernandez, who slotted it home during the final minute of the second overtime period, notching the game winner.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Graduate student Erica Hickey (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) tallied three saves in goal.
