Montclair State Sweeps Softball on Senior Day

Pioneers Drop Pair to Red Hawks, 5-3 and 7-3

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson softball (10-10, 9-7 NJAC) dropped both ends of its senior day doubleheader to visiting Montclair State (13-5, 12-4), 5-3 and 7-3, April 27.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WP opened the scoring in the home half of the second when junior first baseman Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) launched a solo homerun to center field to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
  • MSU pushed ahead in the third, using two singles and a fielding error to gain a 2-1 edge.
  • A run-scoring single up the middle in the fourth made it 3-1 Red Hawks, but the Pioneer got one run back in the bottom of the same frame on an RBI-single from junior left fielder Lauren Naveo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont).
  • An RBI-groundout and fielding error plated two Red Hawks in the fifth.
  • WP cut the deficit to 5-3 when senior shortstop Carly McDaniel (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton) tripled and came around to score on a single from senior third baseman Sydney Pace (Kearny, N.J./Kearny).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Monahan went 2-for-3 with a double, home run and RBI.
  • Senior Ryan Tighe (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
  • McDaniel tallied a triple and scored a run, and Pace finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Senior Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison) (4-5) twirled 5.0 innings, giving up five runs (two earned) on five hits with three walks, striking out three. Freshman Samantha Martin (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) pitched 2.0 innings of relief, allowing one hit while fanning two.
 
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After the Red Hawks exploded for five runs in the first, the Pioneers scored on a fielding error and sacrifice fly from Pace to make it 5-2 after one inning.
  • MSU got an RBI-single in the third to stretch the advantage to 6-2.
  • With the bases loaded in the home half of the fourth, a Red Hawks fielding error allowed junior catcher Anna Nunziato (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) to touch home to make it a 6-3 contest.
  • Montclair State tacked-on a run-scoring single in the fifth to conclude the scoring.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • McDaniel batted 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Nunziato and junior first baseman Jonnalyn McClain (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp. ) both registered a pair of base hits.
  • Freshman Lexi Corio (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) (3-1) suffered her first loss of the season after allowing four runs on four hits in the first inning. Classmate Gianna Mulato (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp. ) gave up two runs on six hits in 2.2 innings of relief. Martin allowed one run on three hits in 2.1 innings and freshman Gabriella Brancaccio (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) worked the final 1.2 innings.
  • Prior to game one WP honored its five seniors – Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook), Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison), Carly McDaniel (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton), Sydney Pace (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) and Ryan Tighe (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills).
