No. 18 TCNJ Takes Two from Softball to Close Out Regular Season

Lions Top Pioneers, 3-1 And 8-0

EWING, N.J. – William Paterson softball (10-12, 9-9 NJAC) closed out the regular season by dropping both ends of its doubleheader against No. 18 The College of New Jersey (17-3, 16-2 NJAC), 3-1 and 8-0, May 1.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Senior center fielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) led off with an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on a sac bunt and came around to score on a base hit from senior third baseman Sydney Pace (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) to give WP a 1-0 edge during its first at-bat.
  • The Lions scored all their runs in the second, using an RBI-groundout and a pair of run-scoring singles to plate three.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Pace went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Senior Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison) (4-6) spun her fifth complete game of the season, giving up three runs on seven hits, fanning two in 6.0 innings. She also finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
 
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Four singles, a double, a walk and a sacrifice fly produced four TCNJ runs in the home half of the first.
  • A bases-clearing double and a sac fly in the bottom of the fourth made it 8-0 in favor of the Lions.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Junior second baseman Jillian Bigos (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) (1-2) registered the lone hit for the Pioneers.
  • Freshman Samantha Martin (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) (2-5) shouldered the loss after allowing four runs on five hits with a walk.
  • Freshman Lexi Corio (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) gave up four runs with a walk in 2.2 innings of work, while classmate Gianna Mulato (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp. ) retired all three batters she faced.
