Corio’s Gem Gives Softball Series Split at Rutgers-Camden

Pioneers Take Game Two, 1-0, After Dropping Opener 8-1

CAMDEN, N.J. – Following an 8-1 setback in game one of its New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader, William Paterson softball (10-8, 9-5 NJAC) freshman pitcher Lexi Corio (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) shut down Rutgers-Camden (6-10, 6-8), 1-0, during the nightcap to give the Pioneers a series split April 24.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A double and a fielder error handed Rutgers-Camden a 1-0 edge in the home half of the second.
  • After a WP miscue put RUC up 2-0 in the third, senior shortstop Carly McDaniel (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton) reached on a fielder's choice and advance to third on a single from junior Anna Nunziato (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo). After executing a perfect double steal, McDaniel slid home safely to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • Four hits and a Pioneer error allowed three Scarlet Raptors to touch home in the fourth. Rutgers-Camden added two more runs in the sixth to conclude the scoring.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Senior Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison) (4-4) allowed six runs (three earned) on eight hits in 3.0 innings with one walk and one strikeout.
  • Freshman Samantha Martin (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) surrendered just one hit in 2.0 innings of relief, while classmate Gabriella Brancaccio (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits in the sixth.
 
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • McDaniel led off the fourth with a walk and stole second. Two batters later, junior left fielder Lauren Naveo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) smacked a run-scoring single to center to push WP in front for good, 1-0.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Corio (3-0) gave up just four hits and one walk in 5.0 innings of work.
  • Massaro earned her second save after giving up one hit over 2.0 innings of relief.
  • Naveo finished 1-for-3 at the dish, with the game-winning RBI.
 
UP NEXT:
  • WP celebrates Senior Day Tuesday, April 27 when the Pioneers host Montclair State beginning at 3:00 p.m.
