UNION, N.J. – Junior first baseman
Caitlin Monahan's (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) three-run home run was enough offense to give William Paterson softball (9-7, 8-4 NJAC) a 3-2 game one win at No. 20 Kean (17-5, 7-5), but the hosts held on to take the nightcap, 4-3, to come away with a series split April 20.
GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- A walk and two singles plated one Cougar run during the home half of the second.
- Following singles by Sydney Pace (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) and Carly McDaniel (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton), Monahan cleared the bases with a home run to left center to give WP a 3-1 lead in the top of the fourth.
- Kean cut the deficit to 3-2 with an RBI-single in the bottom of the frame, but WP held them scoreless the rest of the way to secure the win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Monahan was 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.
- Senior Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison) got the win (4-3) after giving up two runs on seven hits and three walk, striking out one in 7.0 innings of work.
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Pioneers grabbed the lead in the third with a leadoff double by junior catcher Anna Nunziato (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) and an RBI-double from senior centerfielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook).
- The Cougars used five singles and a double to plate four runners in the bottom of the third to move in front, 4-1.
- A two-out RBI-single from Nunziato and a Kean throwing error in the seventh got WP to within one run, 4-3. The Pioneers continued to add pressure and loaded the bases, but the Cougars forced a groundout to hold on for the 4-3 decision.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Nunziato finished 2-for-3 and a double, RBI and two run scored.
- Archibold went 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.
- Nunziato finished 1-for-2 and a double.
- Freshman Samantha Martin (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) (2-4) surrendered four runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings, while classmate Lexi Corio (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) gave up one hit in 3.2 innings of relief.
