Field Hockey Rally Falls Short at Stockton, 4-3

GALLOWAY, N.J. – Despite two second-half goals, the William Paterson field hockey team's (1-2, 1-2 NJAC) rally fell short at Stockton (1-3, 1-2 NJAC), 4-3, during the regular-season finale April 2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Ospreys struck three times during the game's first 15 minutes to build a 3-0 advantage.
  • Junior back Alicia Mitchell's (Morris Plains, N.J./Parsippany Hills) finish at the right post of classmate Abigail Viola's (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe Twp.) pass put WP on the scoreboard at the 19:11 mark, her first collegiate goal.
  • Stockton found the back of the cage again in the 24th minute for a 4-1 halftime lead.
  • Junior midfielder Megan Hoopes (Westmont, N.J./Haddon Twp.) converted a pass from Viola in the 33rd minute, making it a 4-2 game.
  • Sophomore back Kelsie Murphy (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) chipped over the sprawling goalie with 1:08 remaining, pulling the Pioneers to within one at 4-3, but WP was unable to score the equalizer during the closing seconds.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman Emily Hoagland (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) had three stops for the Pioneers, and junior back Haley Olsen (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) added a defensive save.

UP NEXT:
  • William Paterson will compete in next week's New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament. Details will be released after the regular season concludes April 3.
