Softball Sweeps Stockton, Runs Winning Streak to Five

Pioneers Down Ospreys 6-5 and 7-4

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson softball (8-6, 7-3 NJAC) ran its winning streak to five games after sweeping visiting Stockton (2-12, 2-8 NJAC) 6-5 and 7-4 on April 17.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Stockton got on the scoreboard first in the top of third, using a bases-loaded walk, run-scoring fielder's choice and single up the middle to open a 3-0 cushion.
  • A sacrifice fly by senior third baseman Sydney Pace (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) and an RBI-triple from senior shortstop Carly McDaniel (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton) in the bottom of the third allowed WP to cut the deficit to 3-2.
  • A double by junior Anna Nunziato (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) and walk and stolen base by senior centerfielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) put runners on second and third for junior second baseman Jillian Bigos (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South), who cleared the bases with a liner up the middle that put the Pioneers in front, 4-3.
  • The Ospreys used one hit and one Pioneer fielding error to tie things up in the top of the fifth.
  • Stockton push ahead 5-4 in the eighth on an RBI sac fly, but McDaniel leveled the score at 5-5 on a double that plated pinch runner Lexi Corio (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield). Junior first baseman Jonnalyn McClain (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp. ) followed with a walk-off RBI single and WP claimed the 6-5 triumph.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • McDaniel went 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI, while Bigos also contributed two RBI.
  • Archibold and Nunziato both finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.
  • Senior Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison) (3-3) went the distance, surrendering seven hits, five runs (three earned) and two walks, striking out four.

GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Junior leftfielder Lauren Naveo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) broke a scoreless tie in the home half of the second when her RBI-groundout plated McDaniel to give WP a 1-0 edge.
  • An inside-the-park home run by Stockton in the third leveled the score at 1-1, but a bases-loaded walk by Massaro and a pair of run-scoring groundouts by junior first baseman Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) and Nunziato helped WP retake the lead, 4-1.
  • Bigos' run-scoring ground out and a double from Pace pushed the advantage to 6-1 in the fourth.
  • Two singles, a fielding error and wild pitch allowed the Ospreys to cross home three times in the sixth to make it a 6-4 contest.
  • Bigos added an insurance run in the sixth when she singled home Archibold.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Archibold batted 4-for-4 with three stolen bases and scored three times.
  • Bigos tallied two RBI and hit hits, while Pace collected three hits including a double.
