Softball Earns Split with Ramapo

Pioneers Take Game Two after Dropping Opener

MAHWAH, N.J. – Senior third baseman Sydney Pace (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) went a combined 3-for-6 with four RBI as William Paterson softball (4-6, 3-3 NJAC) posted a 6-4 game two triumph to earn a series split at Ramapo (2-6, 2-4 NJAC) April 10.

GAME ONE
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Ramapo used two RBI-singles in the home half of the third inning to jump in front 2-0.
  • WP got one run back in the top of the sixth when Pace doubled to right center to plate junior second baseman Jillian Bigos (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South).
  • In the seventh, junior first baseman Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) opened the frame with a double, and junior catcher Anna Nunziato (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo) executed a perfect sac bunt to advance pinch runner Michaela Raguseo (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic Valley) to third. However, the Pioneers could not level the score and dropped game one 2-1.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Pace went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Bigos and Monahan each recorded a double.
  • Senior left-handed pitcher Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison) (1-3) went the distance, allowing two runs on six hits with two walks, while striking out three.
 
GAME TWO
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • William Paterson got on the scoreboard during its first at-bat when Pace's groundout scored centerfielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook).
  • The Roadrunners used three singles and a passed ball to take a 2-1 edge in the bottom of the second.
  • An RBI-groundout from senior shortstop Carly McDaniel (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton) and a run-scoring single from Nunziato in the fourth gave WP a 3-2 lead.
  • Pace's single up the middle in the fifth scored two, and Monahan followed with an RBI-double to make it 6-2 in favor of the Pioneers.
  • Ramapo scored one run in the fifth and one in the final frame to conclude the scoring.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Pace tallied three RBI, while Monahan and Nunziato each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Freshman Lexi Corio (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) came on relief to earn her collegiate win (1-0), surrendering one run on three hits with one strikeout in 3.0 innings.
  • Massaro picked up the save after coming on the seventh and fanning two batters.
