Baseball Rallies from Early Deficit but Can’t Overcome No. 14 Kean

Pioneers Drop 18-11 Decision

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson (6-2) had its five-game baseball win streak snapped by an 18-11 loss to No. 14 Kean (4-1) March 25.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Cougars opened the scoring with a six-run second inning. After a flyout, a close 0-2 pitch was called a ball, leading to two hit by pitches, a strikeout, walk, two-run single, two-run triple, run-scoring ground-rule double and RBI-scoring single.
  • The Pioneers stormed back with six runs of their own during the home half of the same frame. A two-out, bases-empty error ignited WP, as senior left fielder Frankie Deane (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) drew a walk, junior right fielder Adrian Alarcon (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) plated a run with a base hit to right and junior third baseman Chris Liriano (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) delivered an RBI-single to center field. Back-to-back doubles by senior center fielder Steven DiGirolamo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) and senior shortstop Matt Ferrara (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) made it a 6-5 game, and junior designated hitter Steve Yelin (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional) delivered the tying run with a base hit through the left side.
  • Things were relatively quiet until the top of the fifth, when Kean's two-run homer and RBI-single pushed the Cougars ahead by a 9-6 count.
  • Senior first baseman Carson Weis (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley Regional) opened the bottom of the fifth inning with a base hit into right field, advanced on a wild pitch and Colin Lombardo (Edison, N.J./Edison) groundout, and scored on a Deane grounder.
  • Kean added a pair of sixth-inning runs for an 11-7 edge, then broke the game open by crossing the plate six times in the top of the seventh.
  • Alarcon singled in Weis during the home half of the seventh, and senior Armando Ovalles (Union City, N.J./Union City) plated DiGirolamo with an eighth-inning base hit.
  • The Cougars strung together a double, single and fielder's choice to extend their lead to 18-9 in the top of the ninth.
  • WP scored twice during its final at-bat with base hits by freshman left fielder Brett Coyle (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and Alarcon, a David Backo (Wallington, N.J./Wallington) RBI-groundout and a two-out error.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Alarcon went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored, and DiGirolamo finished 3-for-6 while adding a double, RBI and two runs.
  • Yelin, senior catcher Dylan Habeeb (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and Coyle each tallied two hits.
  • Senior Jason Palmeri (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) fell to 2-1, allowing nine runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out three during 4.1 innings as the starter. Classmate Jason Rivera (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) went 1.2 innings, giving up two runs, three hits and a walk.
  • Junior Dan Carter (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) recorded one out (four runs, one earned, one hit, two walks), and junior Tyler Searles (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) surrendered two unearned runs on three walks, registering both outs via strikeout.
