UNION, N.J. – Following a 686-day hiatus, William Paterson softball (0-2) took the diamond to open its 2021 campaign, however the Pioneers were unable to get past No. 8 Kean (2-0), falling to the Cougars 8-0 and 9-1, in non-conference play March 13.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One
- Kean used two singles, a walk, a passed ball and a wild pitch to plate two runs during the home half of the first.
- An RBI-single and two bases-loaded walks in the third, and three additional runs in the fourth concluded the Cougar's scoring output.
- KU lefty Taryn DiGiacomo stymied WP in the opener, tossing 5.0 inning of no-hit ball while fanning nine and walking two.
Game Two
- With one out in the first, junior second baseman Jillian Bigos (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) tripled to right field. Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison) then reached on a Kean throwing error, which plated Bigos to give WP a 1-0 lead.
- Kean leveled the score with a double, single and run-scoring fielder's choice during its first at-bat, and pulled ahead 2-1 following a two-out solo home run down the left side in the second.
- The Cougars doubled their advantage on a two-RBI double in fourth, and crossed the plate five times in the fifth for the 9-1 margin.
