Volleyball Trio Records Double-Digit Kills during 3-1 Road Loss to New Jersey City

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – William Paterson volleyball (0-4, 0-4 NJAC) had three players post double-digit kills performances, but New Jersey City (1-2, 1-2 NJAC) was able to hold on for a 3-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference victory March 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WP connected on 13 kills in the opening set, but also committed 10 miscues, including a pair of late attacking-errors that gave NJCU a hard-fought 25-22 decision.
  • Trailing 20-15 in the second, outside hitter Kayla Nelson (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Technical Institute) registered a kill and back-to-back service aces during an 8-2 rally that gave the Pioneers a 23-22 edge, however, the Gothic Knights rebounded to secure the final three tallies and took the frame, 25-23.
  • Kathleen Burrough (North Burlington, N.J./North Burlington) opened the third by landing three aces as WP raced out to a quick 5-0 edge. William Paterson continued to gain separation and led 15-10 before New Jersey City made things interesting following four straight points, but late kills by Burrough, Dakota Apicella (Kendall Park, N.J./South Brunswick) and Jamie O'Shea (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) guided the visitors to a 25-18 triumph.
  • The Gothic Knights began the fourth on an 8-2 run, capped off by a kill from Taylor Coriolan and never looked back, taking the set in wire-to-wire fashion, 25-16.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Burrough finished with a double-double of 12 kills and 14 digs, both career highs.
  • O'Shea hit a staggering .588 with 11 kills, while Apicella tied her personal-best with 10 kills.
  • Nelson provided an all-around performance of seven digs, four kills and four aces.
  • Setter Kyla Sebello (Jersey City, N.J./Dickinson) enjoyed her best outing of the season by dishing out 26 assists and adding eight defensive scoops.
