Women's Soccer Beats Alfred in Penalty Kicks, Advances to ECAC Championship

ALFRED, NY- The fourth seeded William Paterson women's soccer team (9-8-1) defeated first seeded Alfred (11-5-5) in penalty kicks (3-2), in the ECAC tournament semifinals, Nov. 14.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Neither team was able to find the back of the net in regulation time, nor both overtime periods.
  • In the third round of the shootout, freshman midfielder Diana Zuta (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) converted the first penalty for either team.
  • Alfred answered right back, converting their next penalty.
  • Freshman back Hailey Nelson (Elmer, N.J./A.P. Schalick) took the lead right back, with a slicing shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
  • In a do or die kick, Alfred tied it in the 5th round.
  • Sophomore back Hailey Krajewski (Clifton, N.J./DePaul Catholic) sent the Pioneers to the ECAC Championship in the 8th and final round of penalties.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Graduate student goalie Erica Hickey (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) finished with three saves.
  • WP accumulated 13 shots during the game.
  • The Pioneers won their first penalty shootout since the 2019 ECAC quarterfinals.

  • The Pioneers will face second-seeded Stockton on Saturday November 20, at 12:00 p.m.with the location TBA.
