Women's Basketball Suffers Buzzer-Beating Loss to Wesleyan

SELINSGROVE, PA.- The William Paterson women's basketball team (0-2) suffered a 62-59 loss to Wesleyan (1-1) on a buzzer-beating three-pointer, in the consolation game of the Yvonne Young Esworthy Memorial Tournament Nov. 14.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • With a Wesleyan lead getting only as high a seven points, a close first half ended with a 12-4 run, giving the Pioneers a 33-32 lead.
  • Fast forward to a 57-57 tie late late in the fourth quarter, junior guard Yakira Rosa (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) nailed a two-point jumper, giving WP the lead with 32 seconds left.
  • Wesleyan answered back  on the next possession with a two-point jumper of its own.
  • A missed layup from senior forward Brianna Brooks (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) with five seconds left gave Wesleyan the ball back on a fast break, hitting a three-pointer as time expired. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Brooks finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, capturing her sixth career double-double.
  • Senior forward Sierra Strong (Howell, N.J./Freehold Boro) and junior guard Brianna Smith (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) each scored 12 points.
  • Strong was named to the All-Tournament-Team.
