Football Can’t Hold on to Early Lead at Rowan, Loses 25-10

GLASSBORO, N.J. – The William Paterson football team (3-4, 1-2 NJAC) seized an early lead at Rowan (1-5, 1-2 NJAC) Oct. 23, but the Profs rallied for a 25-10 victory.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Rowan got on the scoreboard first with a 24-yard field goal 6:00 into the contest.
  • WP responded with a 15-play, 90-yard drive capped by a five-yard touchdown run by sophomore Terrique Riddick (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge). Freshman Ronald Alvarez (Union City, N.J./Union City) kicked the PAT and the Pioneers led, 7-3, with 3:13 remaining in the first quarter.
  • After an interception set the Profs up inside the WP-5, the William Paterson defense held Rowan to just a 24-yard field goal, maintaining a slim 7-6 lead (11:03, second).
  • The Profs used a 69-yard pass play to go ahead by a 12-7 count less than five minutes before halftime.
  • Rowan finished the first drive of the second half with a six-yard TD run, adding the extra point for a 19-7 edge with 12:17 on the clock.
  • Alvarez connected on a 36-yard field goal 23 seconds before the end of the third quarter, making it a 19-10 game.
  • The Profs kicked field goals of 38 yards (22-10, 8:01) and 30 yards (25-10, 1:10) during the fourth quarter to finish the scoring.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Freshman quarterback Spencer Lee (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Hasbrouck Heights) was 14-for-29 for 178 yards and four interceptions.
  • Riddick carried 18 times for 70 yards and a score, and classmate Taz Burton (Millville, N.J./Bridgeton) caught two passes for 74 yards.
  • Senior linebacker Jared Salgado (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany Hills) totaled 11 tackles, while junior linebacker Nazier Wright (Paterson, N.J./John F. Kennedy) made eight stops.
  • Sophomore defensive back Richard Massey (Bridgeville, Del./Woodbridge) added a blocked punt to his six tackles.
