Field Hockey Challenges No. 5 Kean but Can’t Overcome Cougars, 3-2

Viola Scores Pair of Goals for Pioneers

UNION, N.J. – William Paterson (8-7, 1-4 NJAC) threatened to pull off the upset of fifth-ranked Kean (16-1, 4-1 NJAC), but the Cougars were able to escape with a 3-2 field hockey victory Oct. 23.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Kean struck first with a goal two seconds before the end of the first quarter, then made it a 2-0 game in the 20th minute with a strike off a penalty corner.
  • Senior forward Abigail Viola (Monroe Twp., N.J./Monroe Twp.) cut the lead in half in the 36th minute, converting a feed by senior back Alicia Mitchell (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany Hills).
  • The Cougars pushed ahead by a 3-1 count less then eight minutes later, but Viola struck again at the 55:08 mark when she finished a ball played in by senior midfielder Hope Addlesberger (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson).
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Sophomore Emily Hoagland (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) notched eight saves for the Pioneers.
  • Junior back Gina Piscitelli (Oaklyn, N.J./Collingswood) contributed a pair of defensive saves.
  • Viola has a team-leading 10 goals this season.
  • The assist was the first of the year for Addlesberger.

  • William Paterson finishes the regular season Friday, Oct. 29, at 6:00 p.m. at home against Rowan.
