PISCATAWAY, N.J. – After the second day of competition at the Metropolitan Championships Feb. 22, WP Women's Swimming and Diving was positioned 9
th out of 12 Division III teams and 9th of 15 total teams with 195 points.
TOP PERFORMERS:
- The Pioneers began the finals with a 2nd place performance in the B Final of the 200 medley relay. Four WP swimmers combined for a time of 1:58.66. Sophomore Taylor Friedman (South Amboy, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) (31.10), senior Mariah Jenkins (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Saviour) (34.19), freshman Jillian Starace (Toms River/Toms River East) (27.63) and sophomore Megan Hoopes (Westmont, N.J./Haddon Twp.) (25.74) worked together for the event.
- Although Hoopes recorded a new personal best in the 400 IM during the prelims (5:02.78), she earned a 7th place mark in the B Final with a time of 5:03.12.
- Also in the 400 IM, sophomore Leah Santonastaso (Newton, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) notched a personal best in the prelims (5:35.57) before finishing 6th in the C Final of the event (5:38.85).
- Friedman had a career performance in the 100 fly, posting a personal best during prelims (1:03.95) before finishing 8th in the B Final later in the day with a time of 1:05.85.
- Starace also competed in the 100 fly. Her personal-best performance of 1:06.35 placed her 7th in the C Final.
- Friedman finished the individual events of the day with 8th place in the C Final of the 100 back. She touched the wall in 1:08.01.
- The Pioneers capped off the meet with a 10th place rank in the 800 free relay. Hoopes (2:05.91), Friedman (2:12.94), Starace (2:18.36) and Santonastaso (2:21.38) recorded a 8:58.59 finish.
IN THE NUMBERS:
- Junior Sarah Myers (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) notched a personal best in the 200 free during the morning prelims (2:32.31).
- Freshmen Emily Murphy (Stockholm, N.J./Walkhill Valley Regional) and Stephany Bolanos (Perth Amboy, N.J./Academy for Allied Health & Biomedical Sciences) both had career days by earning personal bests in the 100 breast. The pair touched in 1:25.45 and 1:30.92, respectively, during prelims.
- Starace improved her time in the 100 back by touching the wall in 1:11.38 during prelims.
- Classmate Makeda Moore (Plainfield, N.J./Plainfield Academy for the Arts) also improved her time in the 100 back, dropping over ten seconds from her personal best by finishing the prelim event in 1:29.81.
