Sean Smith (Moraga, Calif./Campolindo) led all players with 24 points, but William Paterson men's basketball (9-10, 5-7 NJAC) could not hold off New Jersey City (10-9, 7-5 NJAC) as the Pioneers fell at home, 74-61, Jan. 29.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With the Gothic Knights holding a seven-point cushion late in the opening half (20-13, 5:42), the Pioneers closed the frame on a 16-5 run and led at the break, 29-25.
- After a layup by Smith gave WP its largest lead of the game (37-29, 17:16), NJCU outscored the home team 21-12 over a span of eight minutes to move ahead for the first time since the opening stanza (50-49, 9:14). Senior guard Anthony Uribe's (Hackensack, N.J./Bergen Catholic) driving layup kept it a one-score game late, 56-54, but the Gothic Knights used a 16-3 burst to stretch its advantage to 15 (72-57) before coming away with the 74-61 decision.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Smith knocked down 6-of-12 attempts from beyond-the-arc and connected on all four of his attempts from the free throw line.
- Junior guard Domenic Mignone (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, while classmate Nasir Fields (Winslow Twp., N.J./Winslow Twp.) added 10 points and eight boards.
