DANBURY, CONN. –  Sophomore Abigail Viola (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Twp.) and senior Michaela Meillier (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Holy Cross) leveled a 2-0 halftime deficit but the William Paterson field hockey team (0-1) could not hold Western Connecticut State (2-0) through overtime, leading to a 3-2 season-opening loss on the road Aug. 31.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• The Colonials notched a goal six minutes into the game followed by another successful shot in the 20^th minute to lead 2-0 at the half.
• Viola found the back of the cage at the 33:11 mark by utilizing an assist from classmate Megan Hoopes (Westmont, N.J./Haddon Township).
• Meillier recorded the fourth goal of the day two minutes into the fourth quarter to even up the score.
• With only 18 seconds left in overtime, a Western Connecticut State goal concluded the game with a final score of 3-2.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Senior goalie Kerianne Brown (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) collected eight saves.

UP NEXT:

• William Paterson will open the home portion of its schedule Wednesday, Sept. 4, in a non-conference game against Stevens at 7:00 p.m.
