WAYNE, N.J. – After dropping the opener, 10-4, William Paterson softball (14-8, 1-5 NJAC) rallied from a three-run deficit to send game two into extra innings before falling to Ramapo (13-9, 4-2 NJAC), 4-3, April 6.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One
- Ramapo used a passed ball, bases-loaded walk, sacrifice fly and RBI-double to go ahead 4-0 in the top of the first inning.
- WP tied things up in the home of the same frame, beginning with sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Massaro's (Madison, N.J./Madison) run-scoring single that plated junior center fielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook). A Roadrunner fielding error led to the Pioneer's second run, while freshman designated player Lauren Naveo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) tripled home freshman catcher Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and sophomore shortstop Sydney Pace (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) to level the score at 4-4.
- The Roadrunners crossed the plate three times in the second and three more times in the seventh to conclude the scoring.
Game Two
- Ramapo opened the scoring with an RBI-double in the second inning, and increased their lead to 3-0 in the third, taking advantage of a leadoff single, walk, sac bunt and an RBI-double.
- After junior Alex Grubiak (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) led off the bottom of the fifth with a double to right center, junior right fielder Ryan Tighe's (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) bunt single scored freshman pinch runner Janaya Espino (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic County Tech) all the way from first. Following a bunt single from Archibold, Cooney lined a bases-clearing RBI-double to even the score at 3-3.
- Ramapo would score the eventual game-winner in the top of the eight on a two-out home run to left field.
