Softball Takes Game Two to Salvage Split with DeSales

CENTER VALLEY, PA. – After dropping the opener, William Paterson softball (17-19) led wire-to-wire for a 10-3 triumph over DeSales (16-20) in the night cap of their non-conference doubleheader April 24.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One
  • The Pioneers produced three runs in the top of the third thanks to a two-RBI triple by senior third baseman Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) and a run-scoring single by freshman left fielder Lauren Naveo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont).
  • WP made it 4-0 in the fifth as Naveo's infield single scored freshman Anna Nunziato (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo).
  • The Bulldogs used three hits and a fielder's choice to cross home plate twice during the home half of the fifth.
  • DeSales strung together three runs on five hits, all with two outs, to move ahead 5-4.
Game Two
  • RBI-singles by Naveo and sophomore designated player Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison) gave WP a 2-0 edge during its first at-bat.
  • After freshman Janaya Espino (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic County Tech) scored via a DeSales error, Griffith doubled the Pioneer's advantage with a three-run homer to left field.
  • Naveo's triple in the sixth scored junior center fielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) for a 7-0 lead.
  • The Bulldogs pushed across three runs in the home half of the sixth, but a Nunziato RBI-double, Archibold RBI-groundout and Griffith run-scoring double made it a 10-3 margin.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Naveo finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Griffith added a pair of RBI on a 2-for-3 afternoon, while freshman catcher Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and freshman designated player Caitlin Monahan (Bloomingdale, N.J./Butler) contributed two hits apiece.
