Softball Bested by No. 15 TCNJ on Senior Day

WAYNE, N.J. –The William Paterson softball team (17-21, 3-15 NJAC) fell to No. 15 The College of New Jersey (30-6, 17-1 NJAC), 6-1 and 11-3, on Senior Day April 27.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One
  • The Lions touched home via an RBI-single in the top of the third, but the Pioneers tied it things up in the bottom of the same frame when senior third baseman Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) singled home junior center fielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook).
  • TCNJ made it 2-1 in the fourth on a solo home run to left, and added four runs in the sixth to conclude the scoring.
Game Two
  • Consecutive RBI-singles by freshman left fielder Lauren Naveo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) and Griffith, and run-scoring ground out from junior second baseman Andee Lupica (Maywood, N.J./Immaculate Conception) gave WP a 3-0 edge during its first at-bat.
  • After getting one run back in the fourth, the Lions used seven hits to score six runs in the fifth for a 7-3 advantage.
  • Two costly fielding errors by the Pioneers in the sixth led to four more TCNJ runs and an 11-3 lead.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Game One
  • Junior lefty Alex Grubiak (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) took the loss (8-5) after surrendering six hits, five runs (three earned) and two walks, while striking out a pair.
Game Two
  • Archibold finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen base.
  • Junior pitcher Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison) was handed the loss (7-11) aftfter giving up four earned runs in 4.0 innings of work.
  • Prior to the doubleheader, William Paterson honored its three seniors –Dylan Amico (Clifton, N.J./Clifton), Jillian Bainbridge (Princeton, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) and Christine Griffith (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional).
