Softball Drops Doubleheader to Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The William Paterson softball team (16-18, 3-13) was unable to keep pace with Montclair State (28-10, 9-7 NJAC), dropping 7-6 and 8-0 decisions to the Red Hawks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One
  • Montclair State used two singles and a WP error for a 1-0 edge during the home half of the first inning.
  • The Pioneers leveled the score in the top of the second when freshman first baseman Amber Reed (Verona, N.J./Verona) doubled home classmate Crystal Arendas (East Rutherford, N.J./Becton Regional).
  • A fielding miscue in the bottom of the second allowed two Red Hawks to touch home for a 3-1 advantage.
  • Back-to-back RBI-singles helped MSU add three more runs in the fourth.
  • Junior right fielder Ryan Tighe (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) touched home on an attempted double steal in the fourth, and sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison) scored on a fielder's choice in the sixth to trim the deficit to 6-3.
  • In the seventh, freshman left fielder Lauren Naveo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) tripled down the right field line to score junior center fielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook) and junior designated player Alex Grubiak (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge), and WP tied the game on a Montclair State fielding error.
  • Montclair State used a run-scoring single during its final at-bat to secure the walk-off win.
Game Two
  • The Red Hawks strung together seven hits, a walk and stole home to open a 5-0 advantage in the home half of the fourth.
  • A fielder's choice, bases loaded walk and a sac fly plated three more for MSU in the fifth.
