Eight Extra-Base Hits Help Baseball Roll to 21-0 Victory Against Farmingdale State

Pioneers Score During First Five At-Bats

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – Eighteen hits, including eight for extra bases, allowed the William Paterson baseball team (21-13) to seize control early and never look back, running away with a 21-0 home victory against Farmingdale State (26-7) April 23.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A balk and a Frankie Deane (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) fielder's choice plated two Pioneer runs during the home half of the first inning, and sophomore right fielder Danny Carter's (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) grand slam down the left-field line helped make it a 7-0 margin after two frames.
  • WP tacked on four more runs during the third inning with a two-run homer down the left-field line by junior third baseman Carlos Perez (Hawthorne, N.J./Hawthorne) and a two-RBI double off the wall in left center by sophomore designated hitter Steve Yelin (River Edge, N.J./River Dell Regional).
  • A run-scoring balk and a Steven DiGirolamo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont) RBI-triple made it a 13-0 margin after the fourth.
  • The Pioneers batted around in the fifth, producing four more runs thanks to a two-RBI base hit up the middle by sophomore shortstop Greg Cuevas (West New York, N.J./St. Mary (Rutherford)) and bases-loaded walks issued to DiGirolamo and freshman pinch hitter Colin Lombardo (Edison, N.J./Edison).
  • A DiGirolamo single to right, a Lombardo double down the left-field line and a Vin Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) double to left center pushed it to a 21-0 advantage after seven innings.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • DiGirolamo went 4-for-5 while tallying two triples, four RBI and three runs scored. Perez finished 3-for-4 with a double, homer, two RBI and a pair of runs, while Cuevas was 2-for-4 while driving in two runs and scoring himself four times.
  • Senior Jeff Lombardi, Jr. tossed 7.0 shutout innings, scattering three hits and three walks while striking out two (2-0). Sophomore Jake Kavanagh (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) covered the final 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while facing seven batters.
