Softball Falls Short in Doubleheader at Rowan, 3-2 and 9-1

GLASSBORO, N.J. – William Paterson softball (14-6, 1-3 NJAC) dropped both ends of its New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader at Rowan (16-6, 4-0 NJAC), 3-2 and 9-1, April 2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One
  • Rowan used two singles and a double to open a 2-0 edge during its first at-bat, and increased its lead to 3-0 with an RBI-single in the bottom of the fourth.
  • WP got two runs back in the top of fifth, thanks to a Rowan error that scored junior right fielder Ryan Tighe (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) and a run-scoring single from sophomore pitcher Caitlyn Massaro (Madison, N.J./Madison).
Game Two
  • The Profs got all the offense they would need in the home half of the first inning, scoring five runs on four hits, a walk and two Pioneer errors. Rowan would add another score in the third to go up 6-0.
  • After a walk and a single puts runners on first and second in the top of the fifth, junior second baseman Andee Lupica (Maywood, N.J./Immaculate Conception) singled home freshman left fielder Janaya Espino (Woodland Park, N.J./Passaic County Tech), but Rowan added three additional score in the bottom of the same frame to close out the 9-1 win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Game One
  • Massaro took the loss (6-3) after surrendering three runs on six hits and two walks, striking out one in 7.0 innings of work.
Game Two
  • Lupica finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
  • Junior righty Alex Grubiak (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) suffered the loss (6-3), giving up three runs on 10 hits over 4.0 innings.

  • WP hosts the College of Staten Island on Thursday, April 4, at 3:00 p.m.
