Softball Drops Pair of 5-3 Games to Rutgers-Camden

Video Highlights

WAYNE, N.J. – William Paterson softball (16-16, 3-11 NJAC) dropped both ends of its New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader to Rutgers-Camden (10-18, 5-9 NJAC) by identical 5-3 scores April 19.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Game One
  • An RBI-single gave Rutgers-Camden a 1-0 edge during its first at-bat.
  • The Scarlet Raptors used a sac fly and two run-scoring singles in the second frame to extend their lead to 4-0.
  • WP got one run back in the bottom of the third when freshman third baseman Amber Reed (Verona, N.J./Verona) singled home freshman shortstop Anna Nunziato (Wyckoff, N.J./Ramapo).
  • After the visitors tacked on a fifth run during top of the seventh, the Pioneers responded in the same frame when Reed's single to center plated junior center fielder Vanessa Archibold (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saddle Brook). Junior pitcher Andee Lupica (Maywood, N.J./Immaculate Conception) followed with an RBI-double that allowed Reed to score from first to make it 5-3. A wild pitch and a walk put the tying run on first, but WP was unable to capitalize.
Game Two
  • A bases-loaded walk and a pair of RBI-singles allowed Rutgers-Camden to open a 3-0 advantage after two innings.
  • A run-scoring groundout and an RBI-single in the fifth pushed the Scarlet Raptor's lead to 5-0, but the Pioneers rallied for three runs in the bottom of the same frame, beginning with Archibold's groundout to third that plated freshman left fielder Lauren Naveo (Dumont, N.J./Dumont). Back-to-back RBI-singles from freshman shortstop Emma Cooney (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) and junior pitcher Alex Grubiak (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) cut the deficit to 5-3.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
